6A – Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Economic Trend: Consumer Spending Slowly Grows                   -A:  https://www.forbes.com/sites/billconerly/2017/09/08/economic-forecast-2018-2019-consumer-spending-grows-slowly/#7ddd76ec3ba7                   -B: Here, there is an opportunity for sales within any industry in America. As people's disposable incomes increase, there opportunity to spend more on nonessential goods increases. This allows opportunity for more jobs and allows companies who sell luxury goods to make more of a profit.                   -C: The prototypical consumer would be any worker earning a steady income who has enough left to spend on nonessential goods i.e. luxury goods. As long as their income is not decreasing, a consumer will continue to purchase goods that are not essential for them, like fancier clothes, vacations, nicer home products, eating at lavis...

5A – Identifying Local Opportunities

1. Grandmother trampled, hurt by crowd at Boynton cinema http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/1697CB91BB795B68?p=WORLDNEWS Description: Around 300 teenagers had gathered at the Boynton cinema loitering because they heard there was to be a fight on Instagram. The teens were going to see a movie at 10:30, but were standing around the theater at 9. The grandmother, Sheryl Cohen, was leaving the theater after 9 and as she was walking out, someone in the theater yelled "gun." She kept walking towards the exit, but a crowd of teenagers began running towards her and ended up trampling her, breaking several of her bones, bruising her face, and making her lose a $3,000 hearing aid. There ended up being no gun or gunshots at the theater that night and 11 juveniles were arrested. Problem: The problem in this story is that an innocent person was trampled because of a false pretense and ended up with huge consequences. The grandmother suffered broken bones, a bruised fa...

4A – Forming An Opportunity Belief

Scooter Opportunity               There is an unmet need for scooter drivers when driving in cold weather and rain. These drivers need clothing that will protect them from these weather conditions. At UF, a large portion of students drive scooters to get around campus easily. However, when it rains, it is impossible to stay dry and keep their school stuff dry as well and everything gets drenched. This is an issue as many students carry expensive electronics and can get sick if they get too wet. Additionally, when the temperature drops below 60 degrees, it gets dangerously cold, especially at night. This makes scooting unbearable, even when wearing 4 sweaters at once. All scooter users have this unmet need, as there is no fixed solution to driving in the cold or rain since nothing really works perfectly yet. This need has always existed as it has been raining and been cold long before scooters ever existed. Right now, people try to bundle up when dri...

3A- Your Entrepreneurship Story

Image
My Story                I was first exposed to the world of entrepreneurship when I decided to take a course in industrial design at Northwestern University when I was a rising sophomore in high school. I took this course because the description caught my interest when it talked about being hands on, creative, and working with others to create something. In this class, a small class of three boys and three girls (myself included), we were required to think of products to help combat everyday problems in society. At first, we would just sketch our solutions. As the course went on, we started building small prototypes of them. For example, one week, I built a new iPhone stand that would charge your phone and play movies projected onto a large screen. In the middle of the course, we were split into two groups and were tasked with developing a solution to a given problem. Our case was that we had to design a more efficient pizza cutter. In order t...

2A- Bug List

Bug List 1.      When I try to throw something in the trash, miss, and have to get up and throw it out.         WHY it exists: Because I am lazy and don't want to get up. Also due to my poor throwing/aim skills. Additionally, because my trash can is very small, it makes throwing stuff in it harder. It is also lodged between my toilet and the sink in a corner, so it is in a hard area to throw trash in. Trashcans have a sharp rim which makes the trash fall the the ground if it touches just the rim. 2.      When I’m cooking and run out of an ingredient I need (eggs, seasoning, chicken).         WHY it exists: Because I didn't go grocery shopping or I used up the ingredients I needed (like when I make eggs in the morning). Also because I failed to read over the ingredient list beforehand and make sure I had enough of each ingredient. 3.      When I spill water when I’m drinking ...
