13A – Reading Reflection No. 1

I read Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson.

1) You read about an entrepreneur:
  • What surprised you the most?
I was most surprised by the fact that Apple didn't make Steve Jobs a billionaire. He received the most money from Pixar. Jobs was fired from Apple in 1985, and so he bought 80% of Pixar and also invested 5 million into the company. After making a deal with Disney to produce Toy Story, it was so successful that it made the company worth increase exponentially. Jobs ended up with a 20 times return from his initial amount, which gave him a net worth of 1.2 billion.
  • What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?
I most admired Jobs for his persistency. He never gave up on his dreams to provide a product that changed the world. Once he had a goal in mind, he would not stop until it was complete, which is why I think he was able to change our society.
  • What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
I least admired the fact that he never read the book his biological sister wrote about him. Jobs was adopted, so even if he did have hard feelings about that, I think he should have at least read her book to find out what it said, even if he didn't respond to her about it.
  • Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it?
He encountered much failure. He was literally fired from Apple, which he had contributed and made himself. Also, after getting fired, he invested 100,000 dollars in neXT, which ended up failing and he lost all his money. But every time he failed, he got right back up and tried a new project and tried to overcome his obstacles. He never stopped till he had success.
2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
I noticed that Jobs was extremely persistent in everything he did. If he didn't like someone, he did not like them and would never come to like them or forgive them, like his biological family or Atari, his rival. He kept going at his projects no matter how many times he failed, which is why I believe he was so successful.
3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I was slightly confused about why Jobs didn't try to do things that would have allowed him to live longer. He could have done certain things and eat certain ways to improve his health and allow him to live longer than he did, so why didn't he?
4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
I would ask him what he thinks about how technology has come to today and if he could change something he did what would it be. I would like to know these things because I want to know if he is happy with the events that occurred because of his inventions. I want to know if this was his end goal or if he would have done things differently if he has known how technology would affect the world.
5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?
I think his opinion of hard work was devoting your life to a project. He was an all or nothing kind of guy, and he believed that you should work until your goal is complete and more. I do share his opinion, as something can only be of the greatest quality if you put your whole self into working on it.

  1. You picked a good bibliography. Even if I did not read it, I had the chance to learn about this entrepreneur thanks to your reflection. Reading through it, I saw you mentioned "persistency" as the thing you most admire about him. I could not agree with you more. Persistency, the desire to stay stick to the thing you love, and to never give up on dreams, I believe are keys to be a successful entrepreneur.

  2. I've seen a couple of the latest movies following Steve Jobs death and they failed to mention his relation with Pixar entirely. Steve Jobs is an incredibly interesting man and there's no denying his position amongst the top elites when it comes to technological success. If i could ask Steve Jobs anything it might be "where [he] would take Apple on it's next journey"; lately Apple seems a little lackluster in the innovation department following the death of Jobs.

  3. This is a great bibliography to chose and not just because I chose it too. The fact that Jobs didn't become a billionaire from Apple was also a little surprising to me too, you'd think after all the time and money he put into Apple and how big Apple got that would've made him a billionaire but no it was Pixar. I agree with your question about how he feels about the technology today, I am curious as to how he will respond to that question.

  4. I read the same exact book but it was interesting to read your post as all of our answers were different. I was surprised that Steve Jobs didn't make his millions from Apple as well because that is what he is most famous for. However, the most surprising thing to me was about his daughter Lisa. I was shocked to know he just denied her for so long before finally accepting her as a daughter and allowing her to move in with him.
